Falling Man

UK TV last night showed an amazing documentary about “The Falling Man” based around the unique and disturbing image of a man falling from one of the towers hit by a plane on 9/11. The whole premise of the doco was to consider the impact, meaning and ethics of such a picture. Who was it? And did that matter? Did they jump or did they slip? Would that make a difference? The programme was very engrossing and I was amazed at just how much emotion it brought back about the terrible day.

If you didnt see it try and catch it another time and if you did, how did it make you feel?

Puttnam on Film: Bafta Night 2006

I hope you managed to see the Bafta film awards last week - some great films in competition, but best of all was David Puttnam’s speech when he was awarded the academy fellowship. Firstly, his rich vein of films such as ‘The Killing Fields’ and ‘Chariots of Fire’ was just amazing, but also his passion for stories that touched our humanity and made us think. The speech was so apt, considering the thought-provoking subject matter of George Clooney’s ‘Good Night and Good Luck,’ which if you havent seen is a must. Puttnam spoke of his retirment 8 years ago because he no longer believed he could make the sort of films he wanted to anymore. Now he feels the tide has turned. In his speech he speaks of George Clooney:

“I’m sorry he didn’t win Best Director because I know what he put himself through. He put his career on the line. He doesn’t want to hide and although you have people like Sean Penn doing the same, no one of Clooney’s stature has the guts to try it. I hope others will follow.”

So is there any chance of Puttnam producing films again? “I could imagine myself going back to documentaries but features? No, this award is my closure with the film industry,” he said.

I’m really glad that people of Puttnam’s level are speaking out for films that do far more than just entertain and numb us from all that is around us. We may be very small fry (!), but that’s where the Dog is coming from too.

Well I guess the big news is the new website. We hope people are enjoying it and taking advantage of the lovely media both free and for sale! Joe Baker designed it and we thinks he did a very good job.

Last few months we’ve been working on some new short films called street, 2 of which go live this week. Also been developing a project called talk trigger video with Youthwork Magazine again that goes live on the site this week and will feature each month in the magazine providing a free 2 minute short film to download for the magazines subscribers!!

Just after New Year we did a 5-day film job with Zondervan from the USA, shooting on the Da Vinci Code in London and Paris. They are doing a DVD resource to come out when the film launches in May this year.

Downloading my brain

It’s 8pm on a Tuesday evening in cold wet England and I need to discuss downloading.

Well what I really want to muse about is where is media and culture going? Things seem to be moving so fast its hard to keep track.

I love new technology and all the possibilities it brings. I mean we are really pumped about the new OSBD site and the fact that anyone can get our stuff and download it there AND THEN… I mean, that’s good isn’t it. It’s immediate.

But is technology taking over our lives? The big news is about bio-techs, the fusion between biology and technology (you know - mobile chips in your jacket) the natural evolution being able to download our media direct into your own brain and then using bio-software to display it onto media devices you control through your bio-virtual connections. Cool?

For me I’m not sure. I think in the west we will begin to see lines being drawn between those who embrace all that technology brings, and those who will shy away and create non-tech communities. Just a musing.
