Sam Mendes usually makes good movies - American Beauty is one of the best films to come from Hollywood in the past decade or so. Jarhead is his take on Operation Desert Strom and a group of sniper/marines out on their first combat missions.
The film misses in just about every area. It wants to be Apocalypse Now but never meets the challenge?Full Metal Jacket is a far better soldier movie than this. Jake Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, and Jamie Foxx are the stars?Foxx as a blustery marine sergeant is OK; everyone else is so-so. The movie was over and I didn?t care about one single character, event or situation in the entire film?don?t even bother with the DVD.
