Music Review
Veneer
Jose Gonzalez
Funny name for a Swede.
Actually Gonzalez is of Argentinian heirtage but lives in Gothenburg. After an early career in punk music, Gonzalez has emerged with a smooth and wonderfully twisted take on nylon-string guitar based songs with his tender vocals laid over the top.
Haunting and atmospheric, Veneer is a must-have. Arena magazine thinks he is the new king of the murder ballad, given his habit of covering songs that one wouldn't automatically assume would fit his musical style. His single, Heartbeats, is a cover of a song by The Knife, a pretty out-there Swedish duo.
He is known for covering Massive Attack's Teardrop, and Love WIll Tear Us Apart by Joy Division, in his live shows. The eleven songs on Veneer are a great introduction. There are a couple of more recent EPs available (you can check them out on iTunes)
