Ringleader of the Tormentors

Morrissey

I don?t know how it happened, but somehow Morrissey has dug himself out of his cult-following foxhole and is once again making some fantastic and appealing to a larger audience music.

Ringleader was recorded in his new city of residence, Rome and is produced by the superb Tony Visconti (Bowie etc0 who is a perfect fit for the Mozzster. Love and Sex, two areas Mr. Morrissey has refused to mine make an appearance, but before we get all concerned that he has gone soppy on us?it is Morrissey we are talking about here?cynical, tongue-in-cheek, sarcastic, biting Morrissey, and that hasn?t changed a bit on this new release.

Visconti adds heft to the sound and tosses out the weedy strings and thin-sounding drum machines of You Are the Quarry?what we get instead is a richer, fuller sound?almost an assault. There are traces of an 80s musical homage with some epic synths on ?Life is a Pigsty.? Ennio Morricone, famed Italian film music composer shows up and adds drama to a couple of future live concert epics. Every once in a while Morrissey slips back into his safeguard pop mode?but overall this album is electric and should take him to new levels of adulation, exaltation and cultification!
