Thunderbird
Cassandra Wilson
T-Bone Burnett shows up as co-writer and producer on jazz great Cassandra Wilson?s latest release. Could have been fabulous, but we have to settle for good.
Burnett has been on a hot streak since O Brother Where Art Thou, and it has allowed him to broaden his field and work with a wide range of artists. It must have been a real thrill to work with Wilson. The results are not bad?kudos to her for mining a more ?pop? territory, but it also puts her in direct competition with a whole bunch of people for whom the genre is a little more accessible.
Six of the songs were co-written with Burnett but as is often the case with Wilson, it is her covers of other people?s songs where she really shines. The Wallflowers, Closer to You. She also offers a spellbinding version of Red River Valley! Stripped down and bare, just her remarkable voice fleshing out the song - love her.
