On the Jungle Floor

Van Hunt

Van Hunt says the follow up to his self-titled debut album is "my first album on steroids." I?m not totally sure what he means, but to each his own descriptor.

As for as the new music, he?s still being influenced by the same R&B/funk icons as he was on his debut record, such as Prince, Sly Stone, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield and even Rick James, and that is not a bad thing. He does rock out a little more on this album and perhaps that is the reason for the ?steroids? quote--"Ride, Ride, Ride" gives the impression that he was also channeling the spirit of Jimi Hendrix along with everyone else, --a new icon in his canon perhaps?he?s always been a great guitar player.

Van Hunt?s music has a tendency to grow on you if you let it?some of the songs on this album take a little longer than on his debut?but I think it is worth the effort. Nikka Costa shows up to duet?the obligatory musical collaboration. But so far, it is ?Character? with its Curtis Mayfield freak-flag flying that is my mainstay.
