Your Dangerous Idea

The World Question CenterThe World Question Center is a really interesting place to visit on the web. It is part of a larger site devoted to ideas and critical thinking called the Edge (www.edge.org). It was launched in 1988 out of the success of another group called The Reality Club, a loose collective of intellectual thinkers who gathered on a regular basis to think out loud about radical ideas that might change the world.

The mandate of the Edge Foundation is to promote discussion and inquiry into the whole realm of intellectual, philosophical, artistic and literary issues, as well as to work for the betterment of society. The ethos driving both groups is smart thinking versus the anesthesiology of wisdom—thinking outside the box basically.

Each year the Edge posts its annual question. It invites responses from anyone who cares to contribute and some of the best minds in the world take up the challenge.

This years question is: What Is Your Dangerous Idea? The site declares that, “The history of science is replete with discoveries that were considered socially, morally, or emotionally dangerous in their time; the Copernican and Darwinian revolutions are the most obvious. What is your dangerous idea? An idea you think about (not necessarily one you originated) that is dangerous not because it is assumed to be false, but because it might be true?”

We thought that it might be interesting to do our own version of this enterprise and invite your contributions this year. We have tweaked the question a little to focus on the major issue this site is focused on, so our question to you is: What Is The Most Dangerous Spiritual Idea?

The history of God is filled with many radical concepts and theories about the relationship between humanity and the divine. As we enter the new millennium what do you think is the most dangerous spiritual idea that offers the most hope for making the world a better, more hopeful and peaceful place?
