THE POWER OF FILM
Making films is all about telling stories. Stories that move on screen in front of you. Stories that hopefully entertain , make sense in some way , connect , enable you to feel something , anything.
A film is — or should be — more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what’s behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later.
— Stanley Kubrick
There are no rules in filmmaking. Only sins. And the cardinal sin is dullness.
— Frank Capra
My experience of making films is that at first you must really interrogate just why you want to tell this particular story. Does it impact you in some way? is there a truth in it you cannot shake? Do you think it is a story that others will connect with? Why?
Making films, especially long form feature films, can be a very lengthy and sacrificial process so you really need to know why you are doing it. You must also ensure you have developed and are developing your craft.
In order to write scripts, you must first study the great novels and dramas of the world. You must consider why they are great. Where does the emotion come from that you feel as you read them? What degree of passion did the author have to have, what level of meticulousness did he have to command, in order to portray the characters and events as he did? You must read thoroughly, to the point where you can grasp all these things. You must also see the great films. You must read the great screenplays and study the film theories of the great directors. If your goal is to become a film director, you must master screenwriting.
— Akira Kurosawa
One of the best things for me about film-making is that it at its core a collaborative process. It is often an art form that is seen as the endeavor solely of the director as if they have brought the whole creative process into being.Well it might seem that way, especially in terms of credit althoug somehwere would argue that nowadays that mnight be offered up to the acting stars, but it is not how it does or should work. It is always about team , shared passion and skilled craft, everyone doing thier very best to make the very best. The director should breathe life into that process and guide the ship on its voyage and safely to its destination..
I’m like a navigator and I try to encourage our collaboration and find the best way that will produce fruit. I like fruit. I like cherries, I like bananas.
— Jim Jarmusch
Film is incredibly democratic and accessible, it’s probably the best option if you actually want to change the world, not just re-decorate it.
A Great Movie Evolves when Everybody Has the Same Vision in Their Heads.
— Alan Parker
